There is no sporting theater in North America quite like Keeneland Race Course in October. Nestled amid 1,000 verdant acres of rolling Bluegrass pasture and historic dry-stone limestone walls along Versailles Road, Keeneland is a designated National Historic Landmark and the global epicenter of Thoroughbred breeding and championship racing.
Founded in 1936 by visionary horsemen Hal Price Headley and Major Louie Beard, Keeneland was established with a singular, non-profit charter: to preserve the pure heritage of horse racing. Unlike commercial corporate tracks, every dollar of profit generated by Keeneland is returned directly to horse racing through lucrative race purses, capital preservation, and Central Kentucky philanthropic and equine research initiatives.

2. Tailgating on “The Hill”: The Bluegrass Lawn Experience
For thousands of racing fans, students, and traveling groups, the heartbeat of Keeneland is not inside the grandstandâit is outdoors on The Hill. Located adjacent to the Entertainment Center along Meadow Lane (accessed via Gate 1 or Gate 4), The Hill is Keenelandâs official, upscale tailgating village.

The Hill Amenities & Tailgating Rules
- Admission & Parking: 100% Free. No tickets are needed to tailgate on The Hill on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
- The Big Screen Jumbotron: A colossal 45-foot mobile LED screen displays the live race video feed, race replays, and real-time pari-mutuel odds.
- Live Wagering & BETologists: Mutuel wagering windows and BETologists assist newcomers in placing bets directly on the grass.
- Free Grandstand Shuttles: Continuous complimentary luxury shuttles transport fans between The Hill and the South Gate grandstand entrance throughout the afternoon.
- Permitted Items: Pop-up tents (10×10), chairs, folding tables, personal grills, and coolers with food and beverages. Note: Glass containers are strictly prohibited.
3. Inside the Track: The Limestone Walking Ring & Paddock Ritual
Unlike commercial sports venues where athletes are sequestered behind locker room doors, Keeneland invites spectators to stand just inches away from the world’s most valuable Thoroughbreds. Approximately 30 minutes before every race, horses are led from the barn area into the Limestone Saddling Paddock.
Under the shade of ancient sycamore and oak trees, spectators encircle the famous rubber-brick walking ring. You will witness Hall of Fame trainers (such as Todd Pletcher, Brad Cox, Chad Brown, and Steve Asmussen) giving final tactical instructions to jockeys dressed in brilliant silk colors.
Exactly ten minutes before post time, the unmistakable herald trumpet of Keenelandâs bugler sounds “Call to the Post”. Jockeys are given the command “Riders Up!”, mount their thoroughbreds, and proceed through the grandstand tunnel onto the track to thunderous applause.
4. What to Eat & Drink: Trackside Culinary Traditions
No trip to Keeneland is complete without experiencing its time-honored Bluegrass culinary staples:
Keeneland Bread Pudding
Served warm in a bowl, this rich, custardy bread pudding is smothered in an intoxicating scratch caramel sauce spiked with Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. Available throughout grandstand concession stands.
Traditional Kentucky Burgoo
The Commonwealthâs legendary slow-cooked stew combining tender braised beef, pork, chicken, sweet corn, lima beans, and tomatoes in a spiced, savory broth. Perfect on a brisk autumn race day.
The Keeneland Breeze
Keenelandâs official signature cocktail: Makerâs Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon, a splash of DeKuyper Triple Sec, topped with chilled ginger ale and garnished with a freshly squeezed orange wedge.
5. Dress Codes & Clear Bag Policy
- Clubhouse & Dining Rooms: Strict dress code enforced. Gentlemen must wear tailored suit jackets/blazers and collared dress shirts with ties. Ladies wear stylish race-day dresses, skirts, or tailored pantsuits. Denim, shorts, t-shirts, sneakers, and athletic gear are strictly prohibited in Clubhouse areas.
- Grandstand & Paddock: Smart casual. While blazers, dresses, and collared shirts are customary, nice denim and casual shoes are permitted.
- The Hill: Casual Southern tailgating attire. Layer for crisp autumn mornings and sunny afternoons.
- Clear Bag Policy: All bags entering the Grandstand must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC not exceeding 12″ x 6″ x 12″, or a one-gallon clear resealable Ziploc bag. Small clutch purses no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″ are also allowed.
